Problems in Multiculture Land

The United Kingdom’s Telegraph has an interesting article:  Multiculturalism hasn’t Worked:  Let’s Rediscover Britishness.  Looks like some of the Brits are starting to realize that ‘promoting multiculturalism’ is not such a great idea.  They see that what you get is a fractured society and a lot of conflicting beliefs and practices.  It’s time for us to rediscover Americaness.  (via Hannah)

Update: A New York Times – Middle East article, Beyond Skimpy Skirts, A Rare Debate on Identity, describes the same kind of concerns, but this time from a Muslim country concerned about the invasion of Western culture.  (via Ekawaaz)

Update:  View from the Right has a post about the Brits uneasiness with Muslims: By Baby Steps, the Brits Seem to be Getting More Serious.

Can I just ask, why is it that you’re against multiculturalism? I’m not trying to start a fight or be rude or anything, but sincerely curious. As it stands, I can’t think of why anyone would be against it except for sorta rascist, ‘Us vs Them’ reasons. As in, ‘we don’t want their culture and we don’t want them’ sorta standpoint.

I’ve heard anti-multiculturalism opinions around, but never with an explanation of why, so I’m sincerely curious as to why you [and others] feel this way.

You don’t have to explain if you don’t want to. :p heh. I know I could probably look it up on Wikipedia or something. But I was hoping you could provide some insight..

Multiculturalism is good for Britain in some way. Even I do belive in Multiculturalism and in diversity But I dont understand why we should promote Multiculturalism. In my point when we live far away form our original roots we should follow the rules and custom of that country. Look out the recent cases even in Dubai, which is home of more than 150 nationality has started talking about MUlticulturalism. When we go to any country we should respect their culture abide by their laws.

  3. Julenka: I’m not against multiculturalism; I just don’t see the need to promote it. I’m not against diversity either; I just don’t see the need to celebrate it. See my post, Diversity and Multiculturalism, for more on this.

America, for example, is multicultural. This is a fact. It became that way for reasons other than some faction deciding that it would be cool for us to have people living amongst us who are quite different from us. My writings on this subject are intended to expose the silliness of special efforts to increase diversity: Come be our token whatever so we can grow accustomed to your weirdness.

I do believe, though, that we should discourage the establishment in America of cultures whose beliefs and practices conflict with our laws. We have enough of that already.

  4. Ekawaaz: Thanks for the link. It reports a kind of mirror image of the concern reported by the Telegraph article. And that’s well and good. It’s their country, so they have a right to be concerned that their culture is being corrupted. On the other hand, when they invite others and their money in they should expect these kinds of problems. It’s likely, though, that the people expressing concern are not the people receiving the money.
